Exploring Music as a Civic Expression

Music has long reflected the moments and ideas that shape public life. Across generations, songs have captured shared experiences, cultural shifts, and the questions of their time—offering a unique window into history.

This program features historical context from Dean Stephan Maynard Caliendo of North Central College, paired with live musical selections from the era discussed by Cheryl Rodey. Together, history and performance create an immersive experience that invites reflection on the role music has played in civic life.

The evening offers space to listen, learn, and consider how music helps tell the story of who we have been—and how communities have expressed themselves over time.

Proceeds from the event support Illinois YMCA Youth & Government and its work providing immersive civic learning experiences for high school students across Illinois. Every donation helps expand access, build leadership skills, and support meaningful youth engagement.
